Pyronia tithonus - Gatekeeper

Pyronia tithonus - Gatekeeper. 30 – 38mm. Although it can be regarded as a thermophilic butterfly, it is abundant in England and Ireland, but otherwise absent from the whole of north-eastern and northern Europe. The butterfly may be seen flying in thin deciduous forests, or more open countryside, but has of late vanished from many of its European localities. The caterpillar lives on various grasses.
