Maniola jurtina - Meadow Brown

Maniola jurtina – Meadow Brown. 40 – 48mm. This is a species distributed in northern Africa and particularly al over Europe, across Asia Minor as far as Iran. Even though it has been on the decline in recent years, it still can be reckoned an abundant species, largely resisting the effects of intensive agriculture. Formally it used to be a typical species of meadows and unploughed margins, at present it survives in open, grassy woodlands. It flies in one, exceptionally two generations, from June to September. The caterpillar, which feeds on various grasses, hibernates.
