Aphantopus hyperantus - Ringlet

Aphantopus hyperantus -Ringlet. 35 - 42cm. One of the most abundant butterflies, found in meadows and open forests, which it enlivens from June to August, sometimes even later. In the mountains it ascends to 1500m. Its range extends across all the mild regions of Europe and northern Asia to the Ussuri Basin. In Europe it is absent from the Mediterranean and Arctic regions. Individual variations are innumerable – notably in the number of ocelli on the wings; there are also differences between the male and the female. However, no geographical forms are currently recognised. The caterpillar lives on a variety of grasses, and hibernates.
