Pieris rapae - Small White

Pieris rapae - Small White. 40 - 50mm. Perhaps the most abundant European butterfly. Originally only distributed in the Palaearctic, it has now been introduced with vegetables to many parts of the world. The small white often causes serious damage to agricultural and horticultural produce. It is well adapted to life in agricultural habitats and can be found in warm lowlands as well as in the high mountains. One to three generations occur, depending on climatic conditions. In central Europe there are usually two generations which, being somewhat different in size and pattern, are an example of seasonal polyphenism. The caterpillars feed on crucifers but also on mignonette, Tropaeolum, etc. The chrysalis hibernates.
